Fall 2025
Join us for our Fall 2025 Brown Bag Lunches at the Student Union
Have lunch with us at one of our Brown Bag Lunch events! Bring your own food and refreshments. We will have a computer or phone plugged in to provide some music. These lunches are informal gatherings, and anyone is welcome to join us. We will meet in September, October, and November at the Popp-Martin Student Union, room 267 (pending confirmation), from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM.

Dia de Los Muerto (November 1, 2025, on Camp North End)
Let’s meet at Camp North End to celebrate the Dia de los Muertos and celebrate our Latinx heritage!

Presented by Levine Museum of the New South and the Latin American Coalition, save the date for our annual Festival Día de Muertos celebration! It will take place on Saturday, November 1st. Day of the Dead is a local, intimate recreation of the Mexican Day of the Dead tradition. This colorful and vibrant event will be held at Camp North End and features traditional foods, folkloric arts and crafts, community altars, traditional dances, and fun activities for children. This free, family-day celebration is educational and engaging for all ages.
The event will be on Nov. 1, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The address is 400 Camp Road, Charlotte, NC 28206 (The Ford Building). We will meet at the Canteen at Camp North End, between 12:30 PM and 12:45 PM.
LatinxEd Summit (October 15-17, 2025, in Greensboro-NC)
The Education Summit is North Carolina’s premier gathering of Latine education professionals. Now in its fifth year, the Summit brings together hundreds of the most passionate educators, advocates, and change-makers shaping the future of education in our state. Join us for this powerful multi-day event filled with learning, connection, and inspiration as we work together to create a future where Latine students can thrive.
There is a group rate available for groups of 5 or more attendees, and possibly some discounts for those who are cost-prohibited. Our Scholarship Committee chair, Carmen Serrata (lserrata [at] charlotte [dot] edu) will attend and can be contacted for further details.
Hola Charlotte Festival on October 4, 2025
Let’s go to the Hola Charlotte Festival together!

If you do not know about the Hola Charlotte Festival, it is an opportunity to experience the vibrancy of Latino culture in Charlotte. The event is at the 16th edition and is being hosted by Norsan Media in partnership with Uptown cultural organizations. As the largest Hispanic Heritage festival in Charlotte, this event celebrates the richness and diversity of Latino traditions. All are welcome to join in the festivities, with activities and entertainment for people of all backgrounds and ages.
- Where: Along Tryon Street
- Duration of the event: 12:00 PM – 6:00 PM
- Meeting point: Uptown Charlotte, at the corner of Tryon St. with E. Trade St., between 1:00 PM and 1:15 PM.
Nominate Emerging Leaders by September 30, 2025

Emerging Leaders are now accepting nominations for the Emerging Leaders program. Emerging Leaders provides leadership training and mentorship to first-year, first-time students at UNC Charlotte; maximizing the ability of these individuals to succeed and contribute to UNC Charlotte as student leaders in the coming years.
If you know of a stellar first year student who would flourish in this program, please nominate them using this form. Please fill this out no later than September 20th. They will be notified of their nomination and encouraged to apply by the September 30th deadline.
The UNC Charlotte’s International Festival on Sept. 27, 2025

Come to the International Festival, featuring booths arranged in a marketplace style that represent the cultures of over 35 nations. UNC Charlotte students and members of the Charlotte area community staff the booths. The International Festival also includes dance performances, a Parade of Nations, and much more! The International Festival is open to the public with FREE entry and parking.
2025-2026 New Faculty Resource Fair

Denis and Adriana were happy to participate in the 2025-2026 New Faculty Resource Fair on August 11, 2025. They put together this beautiful table with our new tablecloth with Eva’s help. During the event, eight new people gave us their contact information. The new members were already added to our email group.

Engagement:

- 73 opened the emails
- 25 voted
- 48 abstains (either through form or by opening the email and not responding)
Election results for Fall 2025-Spring 2025:
- New President: Denis Jacob Machado, Dept. of Bioinformatics and Genomics (96%).
- New Vice-presidente: Paloma Fernández Sánchez, Teaching Professor of Spanish (100%).
- New Treasurer: Karla Liboreiro, Human Resources (64%).
- New Communication Officer: Although Denis Vargas (Assistant Director of Creative Services at Student Affairs) won the election with 100% of the votes, he won’t be able to accept this appointment. We will have a new vote for this position later in the semester.
- New Administrative Coordinator: Ysatiz M. Piñero, Director for the Office of Leadership and Community Engagement in Student Engagement, Student Affairs (84%).
- New Social Media Coordinator: Although Susana Cisneros (Senior Lecturer of
Spanish, Department of Languages, Cultures and Translation) won the election with 96% of the votes, she won’t be able to accept this appointment. We will have a new vote for this position later in the semester. - New Scholarship Committee: Carmen Serrata, Assistant Professor of Higher Education, Educational Leadership (96%).
Spring 2025
Affinity Caucuses Spring Cookout
Please join the LGBTQ+, African/ African American, and Latinx Faculty/Staff Caucuses to their first ever “Affinity Caucuses Spring Cookout!” The event will be this Thursday, April 24th at 4:30 pm in the Harris Alumni Center. There will be food, games and fun. Students, staff and faculty are all welcome to the event. We look forward to seeing you there!

Give to the Yvette M. Huet Sí Se Puede Scholarship
The 49-hour giving challenge for Niner Nation Gives is officially ON and lasts until 1 p.m. on April 10, 2025!

Niner Nation Gives is UNC Charlotte tradition and an opportunity to celebrate this amazing community & give back to the areas that matter most to us – including more specifically, the Yvette M. Huet Sí Se Puede Scholarship. This scholarship has contributed to the lives of students that are working toward and completing their degree here at UNC Charlotte by awarding scholarships to qualified applicants dedicated to the growth, support, and empowerment of Latinx communities.
Although we may hold various responsibilities and our schedules can be busy, donating to the Sí Se Puede Scholarship is a way that, whether near or far, we can support students by providing an opportunity that contributes to their success. Pláticas – A Support Space
Pláticas is a group therapy space hosted by CAPS for students to discuss common stressors, receive support and connect with each other over shared experiences. Discussion topics can include utilizing support within the Latinx community, navigating barriers in higher education, exploring identities, and more.
While this space welcomes Spanish/Spanglish speakers, it is not exclusive to only Spanish speakers. This group will begin March 13th and is held every other Thursday at 1:00 PM at the Price Center. To connect to this group, students can call CAPS at 704-687-0311 or stop by the center in person during our open access hours (Monday through Thursday, 1:30-4:00 PM). If you or students have questions about this space, please feel free to connect with me or have students reach out to CAPS at 704-687-0311.

Heritage Language Learning Symposium

The 2025 Heritage Language Learning Symposium is sponsored by the Department of Languages, Cultures and Translation, the College of Humanities & Earth and Social Sciences, the Chinese Undergraduate Student Association, the Arabic Culture Club, the Office of International Programs, and Vista Higher Learning.
The event will be held on February 20-21, 2025 from 10:00 am – 6:00 pm US Eastern Standard Time. Zoom links for hybrid and online events will be sent in February 2025.

Fall 2024
Cafecito at CIPHER

- Date: Tuesday, December 10, 2024
- Time: Noon – 1:00 p.m.
- Location: CIPHER’s Lobby and Seminar Room (on the top floor of the Bioinformatics Building, right in front of the main staircases or turning right when you leave the elevator).
- What to bring: We are trying to be sustainable and we appreciate if you bring your own cup or mug. Also, food won’t be provided (only coffee) but you can bring your own food.
Dia de Los Muertos
Please join us in celebrating Día de los Muertos. We will discuss honoring loved ones who have passed and learn how to build an ofrenda to take home. The event will be on October 30 (Wednesday), from 2 to 4:00 PM, at the Popp Martin Student Union, second floor, room 267.

The Black Alumni Chapter, Latinx/a/o Alumni Network and LGBTQIA+ Alumni Network invite you to join them for an unforgettable “Welcome Back” event! Celebrate the start of a new academic year with a vibrant gathering that brings together students, faculty/staff, and alumni. This event is all about fostering a strong sense of belonging and community within Niner Nation.
Come for the delicious food, stay for the lively music, dancing, and games! You’ll also have the chance to connect with student organizations and participate in a brief program designed to inspire and unite. Whether you’re a new student or a proud alum, Niner Nation is where you belong—let’s make this a year to remember!

Come socialize with us at the I-fest
The 2024 International Festival will be held on September 21, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event promises a good time with representatives from many different cultures. We invite all members and friends of our caucus to join us there. Our meeting time will be 11:00 am. The location will be the East entrance of the Barnhardt Student Activity Center (SAC), which houses the Halton Arena.
