The Yvette M. Huet Sí Se Puede Scholarship
The Yvette M. Huet Sí Se Puede Scholarship
The Yvette M. Huet Sí Se Puede Scholarship would be awarded to junior and senior undergraduate students who demonstrate a continued commitment to the growth, support, and empowerment of Latinx communities. Named after the West Virginia-born and Kansas-raised Professor of Kinesiology, Dr.Yvette M. Huet, this award honors Dr. Huet’s 30+ years of dedication and service at the University. As the first Chicana to graduate with a PhD from the University of Kansas Medical Center in the basic sciences and founder of the ADVANCE Faculty Affairs and Diversity Office at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Dr. Huet’s leadership, comradery, and dedication embody a deep and lasting commitment to the value of Latinxs in higher education. As such, we seek to honor applicants who share this commitment to uplifting Latinx communities, and who will serve as an example for how to extend their arms in both directions, honoring the legacies of those who have come before and charting new pathways for those who will come after.
Criteria for Applicants:
All full time and part time students of any major/minor with at least a 2.5 GPA and with 60 credit hours or above are welcome to apply. This includes credit hours earned elsewhere and successfully transferred towards a degree at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Each applicant must submit:
- a 500-word essay (in English, Spanish, Portuguese, or a combination of these languages) that describes the applicant’s personal and collective engagement with Latinx communities. The essay should also highlight the applicant’s abilities to bring this engagement forward as an asset in their future efforts to enhance the growth, support, and empowerment of Latinx communities.
- a copy of their unofficial transcripts.

We are Looking for Reviewers:
Please complete this Google Form (available at https://forms.gle/RxvHaJ3RkgV1PY7n6) by March 24 if you are interested in participating as a Scholarship Reviewer, and if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out. I will be in contact the first week of April with the reviewers.
As a reviewer, you will be evaluating essays and assign scores using a provided rubric and a spreadsheet. Reviews are completed online. We anticipate that each reviewer assesses 3–12 essays, requiring about 2–4 hours (pending the final number of applicants and reviewers). While reviewers work independently, at least one other person evaluates the same set of applications, allowing for score comparison at the end.
Below is the projected timeline for the review process:
- April 1: Scholarship application closes
- Second week of April (TBD): Zoom meeting to go over the process
- April 10: Reviewers gain access to assigned essays and rubric
- April 24: Deadline for completed reviews and scoresheets
Serving as a reviewer is a deeply satisfying responsibility, with the opportunity to contribute to the academic journey of our students. We sincerely hope that you will agree to join us in this meaningful effort.
We thank you all in advance for considering this invitation. I look forward to working together to support our students.
